Time for a Night Out
Neighborhood groups interested in hosting a National Night Out event Aug. 6 needs to register with the city by July 24.
San Jose police and fire personnel and city council representatives are putting in appearances at some of this year’s events.

Them’s the breaks
Plaza de César Chávez is hosting daily activities weekdays through Aug. 30 to help San Jose residents get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Part of the citywide Viva Parks series, “The Daily Break” takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lawn games, shaded areas and colorful lounging opportunities.
St. James Park is hosting a similar weekday break from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with arts and crafts activities every Monday.
Arts cornerstones
San Jose’s Office of Cultural Affairs and arts commission are again honoring local supporters of the arts with the Cornerstone of the Arts Awards.
This year’s honorees include Bruce Labadie, longtime coordinator of the San Jose Jazz Festival; the Downtown Doors program, which allows local high school students to showcase their art on utility doors and boxes; and Southwest Airlines, which supports events including the San Jose Jazz Festival and Movimiento de Arte y Cultural Latino Americana (MACLA). All three honorees will be recognized at an awards ceremony in October.
‘Doga’ in the Park
Finally, a yoga partner who can demonstrate the perfect “downward facing dog”—Silicon Valley Pet Project and the city of San Jose are hosting bimonthly “Doga” in the Park events, where dog owners and their pets can learn special yoga moves to bond with one another.
Doga sessions are set for Aug. 11 and 15, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at St. James Park. Register for free at https://tinyurl.com/dogaSJ.
Brew at the Zoo
Brew-lovers can hop on down to Happy Hollow Park and Zoo July 19 to celebrate the summer saison with Silicon Valley Beer Walk. Brew at the Zoo will feature live music and a seasonal Jungle Adventure Exhibit. Forty local breweries will be pouring.
