The sun shone during my recent trip to visit family in England and on the surface of things, life there glowed with a prosperous sheen. I spent a couple of days in London, where the streets throbbed with life and culture. As I headed south through verdant countryside, the historic villages of Somerset and Hampshire were peaceful and picturesque, with only the cooing of doves, the bleating of sheep and the occasional whirr of a distant high-speed train to disturb the blissful silence. When the sound of birdsong in the hedgerows grew monotonous, the success of the national women’s soccer team, the Glastonbury music festival and Wimbledon provided entertaining summertime diversions.
