Wheeler Placed on IL With Right Shoulder Fatigue
According to a report from Tim Healey of Newsday, Mets starter Zack Wheeler has been placed on the injured list with right shoulder fatigue.
Wheeler is coming off a mediocre outing last Sunday when he gave up six runs in five-plus innings to the Phillies.
Wheeler, who is one of the Mets’ biggest trade chips as we near the trading deadline, was given an extra start before the All-Star break to extend his audition to contending trade partners. That decision has now come back to bite the Mets.
This injury news comes seemingly out of nowhere, as there were no previous indications that Wheeler was dealing with any trouble physically. Depending on the severity and length of this stint on the injured list, his trade value down the stretch could be severely impacted.
Healey also added that Steven Matz will pitch in Wheeler’s place in Tuesday’s series opener against the Twins. Matz was originally scheduled to pitch on Wednesday.
