Finished up my 1997 Lemond Zurich
This project started about a year ago, when I bought the complete bike from a CL seller in Marquette, Michigan. It came with a mix of Shimano components, but I like Campy so off they came. I had Duane at http:.//www.chestercycles.com touch up the paint for me and started looking for a group. I was talking about this to @RobbieTunes and he talked me into using older Dura Ace.
I was originally looking for a 7700 group, but found a good deal on this 7800 group on paceline and picked it up. Found a really nice set of 7400 hubs with the 7401 freehub, and a donor set of hubs with a 7403 freehub. The tool to remove the freehubs is almost as scarce as the 7403 freehub, but I got one from @thumpism.
Started the build and it went well. I used a VO Grand Cru cartridge bearing headset, and a set of Ultegra bearing cups in the BB. I laced a set of H+Son TB14 rims to the original set of 7400 hubs, and them swapped the 7403 freehub from the donor hub so I could use a 10 speed cassette. Easy-peasy, with the right tool. Since the 7800 DA RD won't handle a cog larger than 28t, I used a Roadlink to give the RD more clearance for the 30t rear cog. The chain is a little loose in small-small, but I don't use that combination much if at all, so that's not a real problem.
I used a Nitto Pearl stem, and a set of Nitto B115 bars. Not having built a road bike with Shimano components before, got some good advice from Rob to get the brakes and shifters cabled up.
I chose Vittoria Corsa G+ tires and latex tubes, and they ride very well. Pedals are Xpedo M Force 3 SPD - these are very nice pedals.
I'm going to change the saddle out for something else, but haven't figured that out just yet. For now, the Brooks is OK but the color isn't.
The 853 steel frame rides very nicely and the tires/tubes only add to that.
