More than 44,000 Con Ed customers without power in NYC, surrounding area as extreme heat continues
NEW YORK — Thousands of Con Edison customers in New York City and the surrounding areas were without power Sunday as the extreme heat continued.
More than 44,000 customers in the five boroughs and in Westchester County were dealing with outages as of around 8:40 p.m. That's up from around 10,000 customers experiencing outages around 5 p.m. Most of the issues are in Brooklyn, according to Con Ed's outage map.
The Sunday outage is heat-related, a Con Ed spokesperson confirmed.
"The accumulated heat and strain from the past few days has built up in the electrical equipment," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

More than 34,000 customer outages have been recorded in Brooklyn. Con Ed is taking 30,000 customers in parts of Carnarsie, Mill Basin and Flatbush temporarily off power so that it can make repairs for the thousands dealing with outages, de Blasio said.
"Their system in parts of Brooklyn is under severe strain and some equipment has failed," de Blasio tweeted."
Around 7,600 of the outages are in Queens. Nearly 2,000 customers were with outages in the Bronx at one point, but power has been restored to most people there. Another 2,295 customers are without power in Westchester County.
Con Ed has asked customers in Sunnyside, Woodside Flatbush, Prospect Park Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Canarsie, Flatlands, Old Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Georgetown, Bronx River, Bruckner, Castle Hill, City Island, Clasons Point, Co-Op City, Country Club, Eastchester Bay, Edgewater Park, Harding Park, Middletown, Parkchester, and Pelham Bay. Also, Schuylerville, Soundview, Spencer Estates, Throggs Neck, Unionport, Westchester Square and West Farms to conserve energy.
People in the neighborhoods listed should not use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, microwaves and, if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners.
There's also an 8 percent voltage reduction in the areas impacted because of an equipment problem.
This isn't the first outage of the heat wave. New Yorkers dealt with one earlier in the weekend.
