CitiBusiness Card Review: Is the Platinum Select Good for Businesses?

If you frequently fly American Airlines for business travel, the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard is a good option for you. It offers generous travel rewards, preferred boarding privileges, and discounts on in-flight purchases.

In this review:

Benefits of the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select

As a cardholder, you can earn double miles on qualifying purchases, such as car rentals, and one mile per dollar on all other purchases. And the best part is, there’s no limit to the number of miles you can earn. You can also earn discounts, preferred boarding on American Airlines flights, and your first bag will be checked for free.

Sign-Up Bonus

The generous signup bonus makes this card well worth it. All new cardholders can earn 70,000 miles if they spend $4,000 within the first four months of opening the card.

Rewards

Cardholders earn double miles on qualifying purchases with American Airlines as well as purchases as gas stations, with car rental merchants, with telecommunications providers, or with cable or satellite providers. Card members earn single mile on all other purchases, and there’s no limit to the number of miles you can earn.

These points can be redeemed on American Airlines flights or through one of their partner airlines.

Travel Perks

  • 70,000 AAdvantage mile:Cardholders will earn 70,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 within four months of opening the account.
  • 25% discount: Cardholders save 25% on in-flight WiFi on American flights.
  • Companion certificate: Customers who spend $30,000 a year on their card earn a free companion certificate after renewing their card.
  • Free checked bags: You and up to four companions will have your first bag checked for free on domestic flights.
  • Priority boarding: You’ll receive priority boarding on all American Airlines flights.
  • No foreign transaction fees: There’s no fee on card purchases when you travel internationally.

Downsides of the Citi AAdvantage Card

The biggest downside of the Citi AAdvantage card is the annual $99 fee. However, the fee is waived for the first year. However, if you aren’t someone who travels frequently, this high yearly fee may not be worth it. You also won’t receive an introductory 0% APR.

If you’re looking for a card without an annual fee, you should consider the Citi AAdvantage Miles Up card. Cardholders still receive miles and modest travel bonuses but without the yearly fee.

How it Compares to Similar Cards

The CitiBusiness AAdvantage card offers generous travel rewards but has a higher fee than many competitor cards charge. Citi also doesn’t offer a 0% introductory APR, which means you’ll need to be able to pay your balance in full every month to avoid interest charges.

CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select World Mastercard vs Capital One Spark Miles for Business

The Spark Miles card offers many of the same travel rewards as Citi. However, the bonus reward for new cardholders isn’t quite as generous. Cardholders can earn 50,000 miles if they spend $4,500 within the first three months of opening their account.

And customers can redeem miles on any airline with no blackout dates or seat restrictions. However, Spark cardholders lose certain perks specific to American Airlines Aadvantage that the CitiBusiness Aadvantage Card offers, such as 25% savings on in-flight WiFi on American flights.

The Spark Miles credit card does charge a $95 fee but it’s also waived for the first year. And, like the AAdvantage Card offered by Citibank, the Spark Miles card doesn’t offer an introductory 0% APR.

Bottom Line

The CitiBusiness AAdvantage card is a good option for anyone who travels frequently for business. Citi offers generous travel rewards and perks for customers who often fly with American Airlines. However, if you don’t need the travel rewards, the $99 annual fee may not be worth it.
