Taking a view: are Enable and Stradivarius banker material?
ENABLE and Stradivarius – two of the biggest names in racing.
Both are running in the next week and both are odds on favourite – so is this the double of the century, or is it simply throwing money away?
The case for Enable is phenomenally strong.
John Gosden’s superstar mare has won her last ten starts, eight in Group 1 company, and returned from a lengthy break with a dominant victory in the Eclipse earlier this month.
She saw off Magical that day, the filly who ran her so close in the Breeders’ Cup Turf last year, despite only being 80 percent fit.
Now she’s had a run to get her back in the zone, her general price of 8-13 appears absolutely right.
Yes, she’s got to take on a Derby winner on in Athony Van Dyck and a rapidly progressive performer in Crystal Ocean, but in receipt of weight she will surely swat them aside in the same way she’s done to so many others.
A double not to be missed
She’s most certainly the banker of the weekend for the lethal combination of Frankie Dettori and John Gosden.
And only four days later, another good thing lines up for the same duo.
Stradivarius has long been the best stayer in the land and proved he’s better than ever this season with a fine victory in the Ascot Gold Cup last month.
The five-year-old has been first past the post seven times on the bounce and, like a rich pinot noir, is getting better with age.
His defeat of both Dee Ex Bee and Cross Counter at Royal Ascot suggests he should beat them again, particularly as he’s actually 1lb better off at the weights.
The shorter trip of 2m is also a big plus, as is the fact he’s been there and done it at a quirky track like Goodwood.
Nothing appears capable of beating him, and at 8-11 he looks a certainty.
So, why not combine the two?
I’ve barely ever seen a double that looks so strong, and the fact William Hill are offering an enhanced price of 9-4 is far too tempting to ignore.
Get on now before it’s gone!
