Edwin Diaz Leaves Game After Taking Liner off Foot, X-Rays Negative
Mets closer Edwin Diaz left the game on Wednesday after taking a line drive off the bat of Manny Machado to the foot in the top of the ninth inning. The Mets announced that the x-rays came back negative on the big toe of Diaz.
Diaz entered the game despite having a four-run lead and Luis Avilan stranded Machado to give the Mets a 4-0 win.
The right-hander came into today with six straight scoreless outings since allowing four runs against the Phillies on July 6.
Diaz, 25, overall has a 4.81 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 3.50 FIP, and 61 strikeouts this year in 39.1 innings. He has 22 saves, but has already allowed seven home runs (only five all of last season) and 43 hits.
The former Seattle Mariner was acquired in the offseason along with veteran second baseman Robinson Cano in return for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, pitching prospect Justin Dunn, and outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic.
