2019 Emmy Experts predict Best Drama Series: ‘Game of Thrones’ unanimous front-runner to win record-tying 4th trophy
If Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are correct, then “Game of Thrones” is about to tie the four-time record for Best Drama Series that’s currently held by “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. Law” (1987 and 1989-91), “The West Wing” (2000-03) and “Mad Men” (2008-11). In fact, it’s not even close. All 19 Emmy prognosticators who’ve chimed in with their picks have HBO’s fantasty epic in their #1 positions, giving it leading 4/1 odds to win on September 22.
These 19 Emmy Experts are: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Robert Rorke (New York Post), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Michael Schneider (Variety), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Ben Travers (Indiewire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).
Over on the comedy side two shows — “Frasier” (1994-98) and “Modern Family” (2010-14) — have won a whopping five series trophies apiece. No drama has achieved that feat, and “Game of Thrones” won’t either since it’s currently contending for the eighth and final season.
In all “GoT” earned a whopping 32 nominations this year, an all-time record for a single season, including bids for 10 performers: Best Actress (Emilia Clarke), Best Actor (Kit Harington), Best Supporting Actress (Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner), Best Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Alfie Allen) and Best Guest Actress (Carice van Houten).
