58% of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ fans say nay to Sophie Pittman in the Top 5 [POLL RESULTS]
A minor uproar broke out on social media when the Top 5 girls were announced this week on “So You Think You Can Dance” after ballroom dancer Nazz Sldryan totally nailed an high-energy hip-hip routine with Season 10 winner Fik-shun. The 21-year-old Glendale, Calif., native oozed attitude, appeared to be having fun and matched her All-Star partner’s every move perfectly. And that hip swivel at the end was the cherry on top.
Viewer reaction was swift on Twitter, with one fan declaring, This was one of those routines worth repeat viewings. Another rightly wrote, “Nazz KILLED that. But while the judges “ooh-ed” and “ahh-ed” during her performance, Nigel Lythgoe hinted that Nazz was no shoo-in for the Top 5. He noted he was a big supporter of her work but acknowledged, “I have been fighting for you this week. I’ve loved everything you’ve done.” But it was not to be. Watch her duet here.

In our poll, we asked who should have been cut instead of Nazz. A rather considerable 59% would have preferred that contemporary dancer Sophie Pittman, 18, from Collierville, Tenn., was booted instead. She performed a spirited cha-cha with All-Star Kiki Nyemchek from Season 14. But Sophie received much more criticism than Nazz. Nigel wanted “more hip action” and Mary Murphy groused that she could see her thinking and needed more from her. See what you think below:

I, for one, thinks that that spin lift was a bit awkward for Sophie while Kiki was the star attraction here. Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

As for the rest of the Top 5 in the poll, 16% thought hip hop specialist Anna Linstruth should have gone home. Next, with 10% of the vote was ballroom dancer Stephanie Sosa followed by contemporary artist Madison Jordan with 10%. As for fellow contemporary dancer Mariah Russell, just 6% thought she should have been cut.

In a separate poll, 41% of fans chose Madison as the female dancer they are most rooting for along with Sophie with 23%, Mariah with 22% and Anna and Stephanie with 7% each. Several Gold Derby readers shared their thoughts about Nazz being shut out.
Susan Br: “I agree, Nazz was robbed, she did an amazing job and I feel Sophie was no where near as strong.”
May: “Nazz should have stayed. She was awesome. Madison is a strong dancer too. Sophie was not strong enough, they told her so…but then they kept her?! Here is to hoping they don’t screw up on the boys too!!”
Francesca vigil: “No, Nazz should have made top 5 and, to be honest, she is one of two dancers who kept my eye all through academy and I will also say I have rewatched her dance like 25 times now. So she should have been in top 5 and they made a mistake. I have watched this show all the way back to season 1 and I am starting to feel like the judges only want one type of dancer and that is not what so you think you can dance should be.”
