The Fab Forty, No. 21: Mitty’s dual-threat QB on the rise
SAN JOSE — Shamir Bey is only beginning to tap on his vast potential as a dual-threat quarterback. That’s why instead of playing basketball at Archbishop Mitty this past winter, the 17-year-old opted to hit the weight room and study film.
“I think this is the most focused I’ve ever been preparing for a year,” Bey said.
Now at 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, he’s looking to become the West Catholic Athletic League’s version of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
“Just someone who’s big, someone who’s athletic, someone who can make all the throws,” Bey said. “Just someone who can really do it all.”
What was his most important development during the offseason?
“Definitely my mental aspect of the game,” Bey said. “Getting to know defenses better, being able to make adjustments on the line of scrimmage based off coverages and fronts and what the linebackers are doing.”
A rising three-star recruit, Bey was limited to eight games because of injuries as a junior. He finished the season with 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions.
A strong senior campaign will only increase his recruiting profile.
“I think they just want to see me play a full season and put it all together,” Bey said.
It only helps that the coaching staff is ready to hand the keys to the offense to Bey after introducing new schemes a year ago.
“I just want Shamir to be Shamir — and enjoy it,” Mitty coach Sione Ta’ufo’ou said. “For him to enjoy the game, let him play fast, know that he’s grasped the offense and we’re rolling.”
“He always tells me if I applied myself he feels like I’m the best player in the league,” Bey said. “And that using my legs and passing I can cause a lot of havoc on the defense.”
