Mesut Ozil could replace Wayne Rooney at DC United with Arsenal star’s rep to meet MLS side’s chiefs ‘next week’

MESUT OZIL could be about to make a sensational move to DC United to replace Wayne Rooney.

In one of the more surprising deals to get over the line this summer, Rooney has agreed to join Championship side Derby in January.

He has taken up a position of player-coach.

And now, according to respected US journalist Steven Goff, Ozil could be the marquee name replacing the former England star over in the US.

Goff reports that: “One of Ozil’s reps will meet with DCU officials next week in Washington.”

Any deal would likely see the former Germany international stay at the Emirates until January before making the switch to the MLS.

And Ozil, 30, would be the marquee-name signing the DC United fans would expect following Rooney’s departure back to England.

Earning around £350,000-a-week, plying his trade in the US is one of the few places that could afford to pay such an astronomical amount.

Rooney, 33, has been convinced to move back to the UK by wife Coleen, who wants their four boys to grow up closer their home in Cheshire.

But he will stay at the MLS side for the rest of their season.

Rooney said: “I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with.

“I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff and the first-team squad from the start of January.

“I am sure I can make a big contribution and can’t wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters.

“I am equally excited to begin my coaching career at Derby County working with both the first team and Academy.

“I must also take this opportunity to thank DC United, their owners, executives and supporters who have been superb to work with.

“I want them to know that I will give my all in support of our push for the play-offs.”
