How do I talk to somebody about their weight without hurting their feelings?
DEAR DEIDRE: OUR rugby club has a brilliant new manager but I’ve been asked to talk to him about his weight. He’s 25st.
I’m a guy of 37. I used to play seriously and now help with training while my 11-year-old son plays with the juniors.
This new manager is 40, enthusiastic and brilliant with the kids.
But he does nothing about his health, though he lectures everyone else about not drinking before matches and watching our weight.
The chairman said I was the best person to talk to him about it.
I’m worried he’ll quit if I say something – but have nightmares of him dropping dead at the side of the pitch.

DEIDRE SAYS: If you must say something that is likely to offend somebody, try sandwiching it between two positives.
So you can say you think the world of him and his managing skills but you are concerned about his health.
Wouldn’t it be better for him to start training with you all, so he loses some weight and encourages the team at the same time?
Good luck!
