Crews contain grass fire northeast of Burnet that began as illegal controlled burn
BURNET COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — It took crews five hours to put out a grass fire that started out as an illegal controlled burn about 10 miles northeast of Burnet.
According to Bertram Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bobby Huffstutler, the fire, which started around 1:40 p.m., near North FM 1174 and FM 963 grew to about 78-acres, before it was contained around 6:45 p.m.
Officials say the fire began as an illegal controlled burn when someone in the area was burning a pile of brush. The person was cited and may face more citations, as there is currently a burn ban in effect.
The fire department says a barn burned in the fire.
BVFD was assisted by the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office in evacuating several homes, although no one was injured. According to Huffstutler , one of the people evacuated was disabled.
All evacuees have been allowed back into their homes.
