WATCH: Patriots cut quarterback-turned-receiver Danny Etling
Danny Etling has been cut by the New England Patriots, per ESPN’s Field Yates. The move creates space on the 90-man roster for tight end Eric Saubert, whom the Pats acquired through a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.
After New England took Auburn QB Jarrett Stidham in the fourth round of this year’s draft, the former LSU quarterback started the transition to wide receiver and special teams with hopes of staying on the roster. Stidham solidified his spot on the depth chart behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer in the Patriots’ first preseason game last week, completing 14 of 24 passes for 179 yards against the Detroit Lions.
Etling spent his rookie year on the Patriots’ practice squad in 2018.
