Mavic freehub: fix it, or replace?

I have some Aksium wheels of unknown vintage that I need some help with:
I am not sure if I should try to implement all the fixes or just swap out the whole rear wheel.
I am occasionally hearing an odd sound from the rear which, after some reading here, I now know to call "howling, likely associated with the plastic bushing in the freehub.
I did not realize the level of maintenance the Mavic freehub needed, so I haven't done any of the standard servicing.
Some reading indicates that lack of maintenance might have left me in a place where more than just the freehub body will need replacing.
Lastly, another x-factor here is that the wheel itself feels loose when pushing on it laterally, even with just fingers and with the QR is done up tightly. This makes me think that I will also need to replace the bearings in the wheel hub itself, which looks like it takes some special tools and know-how.
Should I just buy a whole new rear wheel ($151)? Should I try to swap the freehub body and bearing and clean and lube the whole thing?
