[Men's Soccer] Cavs blank Bears in double overtime to open 2019 season
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – It took extra time, but thanks to senior Andre Dinca, the Montreat College men's soccer team started the 2019 season off with a victory. Dinca netted the game's lone goal in the second overtime period to lift the Cavs past the University of Pikeville 1-0 Saturday night at Pulliam Stadium.
The goal came four minutes into double overtime as Montreat's 42nd shot of the night.
"It was very relieving to get the win, but with that many shots, we were hoping to score a lot more goals," said head coach Michael Bruce. "Hopefully it will start to come together in the next couple of games because we don't want to be that wasteful in front of the goal."
The Cavaliers controlled every facet of the night, holding the Bears to just four shots in the game, none in extra time. Montreat held the advantage in corner kicks 17-2.
Goaltender Jesus Ramos was perfect in net, stopping the one shot on goal he faced.
Carlos Hernandez contributed 14 shots on the night, 12 of them on goal.
"Our mindset moving forward is pretty positive," said Coach Bruce. "We were never really troubled on defense, and we controlled the game for the most part. I think we have the ability to do that against most teams, so we just have to work on putting the ball in the net."
Up Next: The Cavs travel to No. 25 Southeastern next Saturday, Aug. 31 for a 7:30 kick-off against the Fire.
