Carabao Cup results: Burnley dumped out by Sunderland and Leicester beat Newcastle on pens
SUNDERLAND pulled off the shock of the night’s Carabao Cup ties with a 3-1 comeback win at Premier League Burnley – while Alex Iwobi netted on his full Everton debut in a thrilling finale at Lincoln.
Black Cats boss Jack Ross hailed the “changing culture” at his League One club after they overturned Jay Rodriguez’s early opener at Turf Moor.
Burnley, for whom Danny Drinkwater made his debut as one of ten changes, then twice hit the post.
But Will Grigg levelled neatly before Tom Flanagan and George Dobson clinched Sunderland‘s victory with a quickfire double early in the second period.
Ross told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We knew we’d have to play well to win.. Both teams made a lot of changes.
“We felt we have made big strides in changing the culture at the club.
“Fans have endured some tough times but to watch their team win at a Premier League team is nice for them.”
Jamie Vardy tucked home a shootout winner – after Kasper Schmeichel defied Newcastle penalties from Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden – as Leicester won 4-2 on spot-kicks following a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.
Yoshinori Muto’s had stabbed the Toon level on 53 minutes after James Maddison’s deflected free-kick opener for the Foxes.

Full debutant Alex Iwobi and frontpartner Richarlison bagged late headers as Everton won 4-2 at Lincoln.
Harry Anderson had blasted the League One hosts in front inside 20 SECONDS before Lucas Digne fired home a stunning free-kick equaliser from 30 yards.
Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s penalty restored the lead for the Toffees, who saw 19-year-old Italy striker Moise Kean make a lively debut in English football, but Bruno Andrade volleyed a superb Lincoln leveller.
But then £40m Iwobi turned the game again.
Everton boss Marco Silva told Sky Sports: “We did not start how we wanted, it was the worst way, but we showed personality to keep doing what we should do and how we want to play.
“I told the players to keep playing fast; we did that and in some moments we did very well.
“They scored again with a fantastic strike but we took risks, changed the formation and then scored the third and added the fourth. We deserved to go through.”
Elsewhere, Atdhe Nuhiu’s bundled Sheffield Wednesday‘s 96th minute winner at local rivals Rotherham, while Bournemouth beat League Two Forest Green Rovers 3-0 on penalties following a goalless stalemate.
Cherries keeper Mark Travers saved all three of Rovers’ shootout spot-kicks.
