Maybe the problem is 5-3-2 ( or 5-3-1-1). Defending, a back five is unwieldy, over-complicated and cumbersome. In attack, the wing backs would need to advance beyond the midfield and rely upon them to retain possession long enough to get the ball forward.

Unfortunately, the three in midfield are easily swamped and the wing backs can’t move too far forward in case of a counter attack through the three-man defence, if the midfield loses possession.

The wingback system only works with intelligent rapid movement and pin-point passing. As our players haven’t played together enough and can’t anticipate runs into space, they hold on to the ball too long. As for pin-point passing, well we ain’t Man City, are we?

I feel sorry for Pep. It ain’t gonna get better anytime soon. Not while Dong is calling the shots.
