Libby Squire’s body finally released to her family six months after death on night out
LIBBY Squire’s body has finally been released to her grieving family six months after she was killed on a drunken night out.
The 21-year-old philosophy and religion student went missing in Hull in February sparking a huge search.
But tragically her body was discovered in Grimsby Docks six weeks after she vanished.
Her body has only today been released to her family as police continued to investigate her murder – with a file being prepared for the CPS.
Results of a post-mortem examination have not been made public “for investigative and operational reasons”.
Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley of Humberside Police said: “In consultation with the coroner, we are now in a position for Libby’s body to be released to her family.
“Libby’s parents have been informed and arrangements are being made for her to be returned to them.
“Understandably, this will be an incredibly emotional time as Libby was found just over five months ago, however for investigative reasons we were unable to return Libby back to them until now.
“I want to express my gratitude and thanks for their patience and understanding, as losing a loved one is always a heart-breaking experience, but the circumstances surrounding Libby’s tragic death make it even more devastating.”
He explained no funeral arrangements have been made yet and results from additional analysis are being finalised.
Libby went missing after being turned away from the Welly nightclub in Hull for being too drunk and was put in a taxi and driven home.
But after staggering around she ended up sat on a park bench nearby at 11.45pm.
CCTV footage taken minutes later at 12.09am shows a woman believed to be Libby getting into a car and being driven away.
A woman living close to where Libby was last seen described hearing “bloodcurdling screams” at 12.30am.
They were so terrifying they made the woman sit up in bed and say: “Oh my God.”
Cops launched a massive hunt and searched a river and pond close to her home.
Bins, drains and gardens were also swept but without trace.
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION
A 25-year-old was arrested days later on suspicion of Libby’s abduction but he was ‘released under investigation’.
He was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of murder but was again released under investigation.
Libby’s parents, Lisa, 48, and Russ, 53, were left heartbroken by her death.
Lisa affectionately referred to her daughter as “Pie” and said she had lost “one of the four most precious things in my life”.
She added: “I cannot thank you enough my darling Pie for making me a mummy. For choosing me to be your mummy. It’s an honour, a privilege and a joy.
“I kept you safe for as long as I could and I am so sorry I could not keep you safe on that night. I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry.”
