The United States continues its victory tour of America with the first of two friendlies against Portugal in Philadelphia on Thursday. The back-to-back World Champions reconvene after nearly a month with their respective clubs to celebrate their history-making performance at this summer’s World Cup.

The celebration tour has also evolved into a farewell tour for head coach Jill Ellis, who announced she would be leaving her post as USWNT manager after these six matches conclude in October. In one of her final rosters, she has called up Chicago’s Casey Short and North Carolina’s Kristen Hamilton due to a few injuries. For Hamilton, this is her first-ever call-up to the national team. 

A win over Ireland at the beginning of August saw the victory tour kickoff in a successful fashion. Tobin Heath, Lindsey Horan, and Carli Lloyd all found the net in the 3-0 triumph. Ellis’ farewell circuit will see another match against Portugal next week and then conclude with two matches against South Korea in October. Ellis needs three wins in her last four matches to become the USWNT’s all-time leader in wins as a manager. 

While this tour is all about celebrating the fantastic accomplishment of winning back-to-back World Cups and becoming the first country to reach four titles, it’s also a bit of a transition period. U.S. Soccer has hired former national team player Kate Markgraf as the team’s general manager. She will be highly influential in helping select Ellis’ successor. These next few matches could very well be the end of an era with the Olympics coming up next year.
