Emmys 2019 predictions slugfest: Is ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ invincible in Best Competition Program? [WATCH]

Gold Derby contributor Luca Giliberti declares “RuPaul’s Drag Race” a “slam dunk” to win Best Competition Program at this year’s Emmys, and our odds agree. Currently, the show that makes or breaks the dreams of aspiring drag queens is widely expected to score a repeat victory in the category, with RuPaul predicted to win his fourth consecutive prize for Best Reality Host. But is the race more… well, competitive than we think? Giliberti recently teamed up with fellow editors Riley Chow and myself to see if there’s a spoiler in the bunch. “Drag Race” has become an Emmy favorite in recent years, with nine wins including Best Competition Program last season. With 11 bids this year, it remains a formidable challenger, even with four-time champ “The Voice” still in the hunt (not to mention “The Amazing Race,” which earned a record 10 victories in the category, and “Top Chef,” which won once; “American Ninja Warrior” rounds out the category). “Once they drop a show, they don’t reward it again,” Giliberti explains. Plus, “‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ is still incredibly popular.”

But, as Chow points out, “RuPaul is only on a one year streak at this point, so maybe last year was just a fluke and we’ll get back to ‘The Voice’ for the next several years again.” But if there’s an upset lurking, he’s betting on “Nailed It!,” Netflix’s popular new baking program. “I feel like it is the show that has some people excited in this category, which is more than I can maybe say about the other nominees.”

He also thinks Marie Kondo has a chance of unseating RuPaul for Best Reality Host after the breakout success of her series “Tidying Up.” “What I like about her nomination is she actually got it because people are watching her show,” he explains. “She definitely did not get her nomination through name recognition,” unlike, say, perhaps Ellen DeGeneres (“Ellen’s Game of Games”) or James Corden (“The World’s Best”).

Though I’m sticking with RuPaul for both host and series, I’m keeping an eye out for Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler, who reunited for the new show “Making It.” “I think there’s a lot of goodwill towards both of them,” I divulge. While Poehler won her first Emmy in 2016 for co-hosting “Saturday Night Live” with Tina Fey, Offerman is a first time contender. “I think there’s probably a lot of people who think he should’ve won several Emmys for ‘Parks and Recreation,’ and they’re just probably glad to see that he’s finally nominated.”
