My girlfriend’s due to give birth soon but she seems down since her mum died
DEAR DEIDRE: WE are to have our first child soon, but my girlfriend seems really down and she’s not doing anything to get ready for the baby.
She’s 28 and I’m 25. We’ve been together for three years. When I first met her, she was very low because her sister had died shortly before aged just 30.
She started to get her spark back and we were both thrilled when she got pregnant.
Then her mum died at the start of the year and, a month later, her aunt passed away. She was just devastated.
Now she just plays games on her phone for hours. She goes to bed early and sleeps really late and always says she’s tired.
I’m trying to prepare for the baby. I don’t know what to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: It must be hard to be expecting a baby when she can’t share the developments with her mother or her sister.
The loss for her is so raw.
Insist that she sees her GP as she is showing signs of depression. Some antidepressants are safe to take in pregnancy.
She can also find support from Cruse Bereavement Care (cruse.org.uk, 0808 808 1677).
