Hwy 26 reopens after deadly crash west of Manning
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — U.S. Highway 26 has reopened west of Manning following a crash that left one person dead Friday afternoon.
Highway 26 was closed in both directions near the Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel at milepost 41 shortly after 12:30 p.m. The highway reopened after about 2.5 hours.
The crash involved only a single vehicle.
Oregon State Police are leading the ongoing investigation.
Detours
Friday’s deadly crash comes at the start of a busy Labor Day weekend.
A 20- to 30-minute detour around the crash routed traffic onto OR 47 and Timber Road while Highway 26 was closed.
“It’s a very skinny road, it’s not meant for large vehicles at all,” said Chris Richard, one of the drivers who was detoured. “It’s very farm country out there, so it’s definitely not one you want to take your giant RV on if you can avoid it.”
Authorities want everyone to heed speed limits, travel sober, stay alert, look out for others and buckle up.
