‘Barry’ upset in the making? 1 rogue Emmy Expert predicts it’ll win Best Comedy Series

0

Emmy Expert Ben Travers (Indiewire) is going rogue in his Best Comedy Series predictions, as he’s the only one with HBO’s “Barry” in his #1 position. Is he right that an Emmy upset could be in the making? Last year this hitman-turned-actor show took home three Emmy Awards: Best Comedy Actor (Bill Hader), Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Henry Winkler) and Best Half-Hour Sound Mixing. Now “Barry” is hoping to improve upon that total with its jaw-dropping 17 nominations, more than any other comedy series besides “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” at 20 bids.

Travers is one of 25 Emmy Experts at Gold Derby who’ve chimed in with their winner predictions. The majority of these savvy pundits — 14, to be exact — believe HBO’s “Veep” will win its fourth trophy after previously prevailing in 2015-17. They are: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Michael Schneider (Variety), Jazz Tangcay (Awards Daily), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine).

Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s “Flebag” is next in line with these six Emmyologists predicting a victory for its second season: Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Robert Rorke (New York Post) and Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com). Based on Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show, the Amazon laffer exploded in nominations this year, receiving 11 total after being completely snubbed back in 2017.

Four prognosticators think Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will triumph for the second consecutive time: Ed Martin (Media Village), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby). As a reminder, “Veep” was not eligible last year because of Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ cancer treatment, and 1950s-set “Mrs. Maisel” took advantage of that opening by winning Best Comedy Series on its first at-bat.

Based on our Experts’ rankings of the seven Best Comedy Series nominees, here is how they all place on the winner’s chart. Do YOU agree or disagree with our Emmy gurus’ predictions? Give us your take down in the comments section.

“Veep” — 5/1 odds

“Fleabag” — 11/2 odds
