Jimmy Garoppolo makes his first regular season appearance since tearing his ACL last September and he hopes to lead the 49ers to their first road victory since 2017. San Francisco may catch a break due to illness as two of the Buccaneers best players could miss the game due to the flu. Pro Bowl wide receiver and promising rookie linebacker Devin White from LSU are both listed as questionable.

Tampa Bay, led by inconsistent quarterback Jameis Winston, is looking to duplicate its 27-9 victory over the 49ers at Raymond James Stadium last November.

Winston, though, didn’t have to deal with the two new edge rushers the 49ers will be unleashing Sunday in top pick Nick Bosa and free-agent Dee Ford.

Another story to monitor is the return of new 49ers linebacker Kwon Alexander to Tampa Bay. San Francisco signed Alexander to a four-year, $54 million deal after he spent the past four seasons with the Bucs. Like Garoppolo, Alexander is coming off a torn ACL.

Next up after Sunday’s opener for the 49ers is another road game. They’ll take on the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.
