MANCHESTER UNITED fans could not hide their excitement about seeing Robin van Persie get on the score-sheet during Vincent Kompany’s testimonial.

Van Persie, 36, spent three seasons at Old Trafford and scored 58 times in 105 appearances in all competitions.

He was also part of the last United team to win the league.

But the Flying Dutchman has not played for United since he was sold to Fenerbahce in 2015 for a paltry £4million.

However, he was back in Manchester for Vincent Kompany’s testimonial fixture, lining up for the Premier League Legends alongside the likes of Robbie Keane and Paul Scoles.

But it was some wizardry from ex-Everton midfielder Tim Cahill that gave Van Persie enough space to shoot, 20 yards out from goal, and he produced a signature left-footed finish to give his side a 2-1 lead.

And the goal was enough to send Manchester United fans into overdrive on Twitter at the thought that even at 36, Van Persie might still have something to offer.

Marcus Webster wrote: “Van Persie could genuinely do a job for us, still a better finisher than Rashford.”

Another, Paul Burton, said: “Van Persie could still play up to for us.”

Manchester United will rely on Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford up front this season after failing to replace outgoing Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku.

Some United fans suggested that had left a vacancy for Van Persie while others suggested that he was not the only one who stood out from the testimonial fixture.

Tom Green said: “Giggs, Scholes and Van Persie could all still start for United.”

One user known as Coach Sammy reminisced: “When will we have players like Carrick, Scholsy, Giggs and Van Persie again #mufc? A great joy to watch them ball”
