ROADS were closed today around Battersea Power Station following a “security alert” reportedly sparked by a suspicious item.

The Metropolitan Police warned people should “expect to see an enhanced policing presence in the area” as they investigated.

But the Met Police said after an alert nothing was found.

Police have now reopened Nine Elms Lane at the junction of and Wandsworth Road as officers leave the area.

The iconic south London building which dates from 1929 is currently being renovated and turned into high-end flats, part of a regeneration project for the area.

This follows the construction of the nearby US Embassy on Nine Elms Lane.

The coal-fire powered station had previously derelict after being decommissioned in 1975 after it was decided it cost too much to run.

But the Art Deco building remained a key landmark on the London skyline with influences on architecture and art.

This includes the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album, Animals.

The developers for the building said: “We are aware of a security alert on the Battersea Power Station Phase 3 building site.

“The situation is being managed by the Metropolitan Police and we will assist them wherever possible.”
