Mill Valley bicycle-pedestrian bridge closed due to faulty support post

A widely used bicycle-pedestrian bridge connecting Mill Valley’s Bayfront and Hauke Parks has been closed due to a structural deficiency.

Mill Valley police notified residents Friday afternoon that the bridge was shut down because one of the 12 support posts for the bridge has been compromised. Structural engineers are evaluating the bridge to recommend next steps. It is unclear how long the bridge will remain closed.

Public Works Director Andrew Poster said there is a noticeable bounce to the bridge when running over it and the deck sags near the compromised area. He said at low tide the compromised post appears to be splintered.

“It’s a well-used bridge,” he said. “It’s going to have an impact.”

Updates will be posted online at cityofmillvalley.org and on signs around the area. Pedestrians and cyclists should plan for alternate routes.
