Boris Johnson woos Northern cities by letting them set their own rail fares

BORIS Johnson fishes for more votes in the North by announcing that its cities will be able to set their own rail fares.

Visiting Doncaster Market and Rotherham yesterday with Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry, the PM vowed to “do devolution properly”.

He said:  “I’m announcing my intention to give the railways of the North back to the people of the North.

“It is local leadership — trusting people to take back control and run things in the way they want to. Only local champions can really make the difference for their towns and their communities.

“It’s time for the North to run its own trains.”

As well as promising London-style powers over timetables,  rolling stock and stations, he pledged more metro mayors for the region.

At the market he had selfies with supporters before buying English Victoria plums and inspecting a fishmonger’s  lobsters.

Talking  about Brexit, he quipped:  “We’ve got to take a few claws out of that Withdrawal Agreement.”
