Despite how far society has come in accepting queerness and homosexuality, sports has lagged behind. No NHL player has ever come out of the closet and only a handful of NFL, MLB and NBA athletes have come out, usually after their playing careers are over. Homophobic language is still prevalent on sports rinks, fields and courts.
