A MYSTERIOUS object spotted by US Navy pilots may have been searching for a submerged object, a former NASA researcher has said.
Video was taken during the 2004 incident show the objects performing manoeuvres not possible using current aviation technology.
The incident occurred off the coast of California and involved aircraft from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, which were conducting a training exercise.
The incident happened over a couple of days in November 2004 but the video footage of the flying object was not revealed to the public until December 2017.
Kevin H. Knuth has now put forward a new theory about what the object was up to in the 2004 incident in a paper entitled “Estimating Flight Characteristics of Anomalous Unidentified Aerial Vehicles”, the Daily Star reports.
“They also seemed to act like they were looking for something by slowly tracking south at 100 knots or so at 28,000Ft altitude,” he writes,
He said the two fighter pilots who encountered the UFO did not immediately notice it, but instead saw a “large turbulent area of waves breaking as if over the surface of a submerged object”.
Knuth, a professor of physics at the University of Albany, said after the encounter, the submerged object was no longer present.
He concludes UAP was interested in the submerged object.
“It is possible that this object and others like it are the reason that the UAPs were in the area. Clearly, the UAP was interested in the submerged object.”
VANISHED INTO THIN AIR
A leaked report from the Pentagon revealed that a supersonic UFO shaped like a Tic Tac sweet had stalked a US Aircraft carrier for days before vanishing into thin air.
Some of the pilots said that the aircraft could make itself invisible as it travelled next to them.
The craft was described by one of the pilots mentioned in the report as “solid white, smooth, with no edges… uniformly coloured with no nacelles, pylons or wings”, and looked like “an elongated egg or Tic Tac”.
How many alien and UFO sightings have there been?
The number of UFO sightings is currently flying at an all-time high
According to data cruncher and blogger Sam Monfort there are around 45,000 annual reported sightings in the US.
He also says there have been more than 100,000 recorded UFO sightings in the past 100-plus years.
The first recorded flyby occurred in Portland in 1905, where viewers reported seeing a “buzzing” sphere-shaped UFO that descended from the heavens.
Sightings have spiked dramatically over the past 30-plus years with mysterious lights taking over from saucers as the most popular description of objects spotted.
The National UFO Reporting Centre is an organisation that investigates sightings.
Since it was set up in 1974, reports have been sent to it via its 24 hour hotline and it says that between May and June this year there have been more than 500 new sightings.
The United States collectively reports 2,500 sightings per 10 million people, which is 300 times more than the global median.
Pilots who witnessed the incident reported that they picked up the presence of 8 to 10 objects in their radar equipment.
Two videos taken in 2015 by veteran pilot of an F/A – 18 fighter aircraft witnessed a raft of anomalous aerial vehicles during the training exercise off the coast of Jacksonville.
Awestruck by what he had witnessed he said: “There’s a whole fleet of them. Look at that thing, it’s rotating.”
US Navy has this week admitted that the video and two others taken by pilots – which were all made public in 2017 – and apparently showing encounters with “unidentified aerial phenomena” are real.
Confirmation that the videos are real came in statements to unexplained phenomenon website The Black Vault.
The Navy designates the objects contained in these videos as unidentified aerial phenomena,” said Joseph Gradisher, spokesperson for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare.
“The ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ terminology is used because it provides the basic descriptor for the sightings/observations of unauthorized/unidentified aircraft/objects that have been observed entering/operating in the airspace of various military-controlled training ranges.”
In June it emerged that top US politicians have been given a secret briefing about the encounters.
A spokeswoman for Senator Mark Warner, the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, confirmed the briefing took place.
“If naval pilots are running into unexplained interference in the air, that’s a safety concern Senator Warner believes we need to get to the bottom of,” Rachel Cohen told Politico.

Earlier this year, the Navy revealed there have been reported sightings of UFOs hovering above top-secret military bases and flying near aircraft.
The daily sightings came over the course of 2014 and 2015 and were reported to the Pentagon and Congress.
Briefing requests by Congress members have been on the increase since it was revealed the Pentagon’s shadowy Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) still investigates UFO sightings, the New York Post reported.
