Stunned onlookers spot floating car on Norfolk Broads canal

Many movie fans will recall the iconic James Bond scene which saw 007 drive a Lotus Esprit into the Atlantic sea.

However, a car that has no problem taking to the water is something we all likely never thought we’d stumble across in real life.

But our theory was turned on its head when onlookers spotted a floating motor on the Norfolk Broads recently.

The car, thought to be a 1960s amphicar designed to travel on land and water, left many people excited as it made its way along the canal.

The sight was captured by Gary Bartlett, 52, who posted a video of the amphibious vehicle at Wroxham to social media.

As the car floated along, driven by a man with two passengers, Gary could be heard giggling and saying: ‘I’ve seen it all now!’

Gary, who is from Buxston, said; ‘I was picking my wife up from work, she works in a cafe overlooking the river, and I looked back on the water towards the bridge, and noticed the car appearing from underneath it.

‘I just had to get my phone out and video it because it’s just not something you see every day. It was like something from a Bond film.’

Mr Bartlett, who is the director of Bart Lettings, was on his new boat with his family on the Norfolk Broads at Wroxham, earlier this month.

The German-designed Amphicar was first produced in 1961 and 3,878 were sold before production stopped in 1968.

The car remains a collector’s item today and is celebrated by owners at Amphicar ‘swim-ins’.
