A woman who was so distraught at losing her dog that she quit her job to search for her found her pet after 57 days apart.

Carole King was enjoying a break near Glacier Lake National Park in Montana with her husband and border collie Katie on July 20 when Katie managed to escape her hotel

Carole, from Washington State, and her husband spent hours searching for the dog, but to no avail.

The besotted dog owner spent weeks spreading the word about Katie online, posted 500 missing fliers, and even set up motion-detector cameras in areas where the dog had been sighted.

She also resigned from work to devote all her time to trying to find Katie, who Carole believes fled their hotel after being spooked by a storm.

Carole came close to finding her skittish, timid pet on September 15 when a man called to say a dog matching Katie’s description was in her yard.

They were distraught to arrive and find Katie gone – but an amazing stroke of luck finally reunited Carole with her pet moments later.

She started giving out fliers after missing Katie, only for a woman to walk up to her while she did so.

Carole told the Daily Inter Lake: ‘As the lady was walking back, she points over to the tree where it’s real dark and says, “Is that your dog?”

‘And I turn and it’s Katie.’

Carole was able to coax her pet over to her, saying ‘Katie. Katie girl!’ – and she was overjoyed when the seven year-old collie responded.

She explained: ‘I just bear-hugged her, I wasn’t going to let her go.

‘Tears were flying, we were screaming, everybody is high-fiving, hugging each other.

‘People are stopping in their vehicles, getting out and hugging us.

I think the whole neighborhood knew that we found her.’

Katie was taken to a local veterinarian – where she was immediately recognized – for a checkup.

The vet said that she’d lost 12 pounds and was dehydrated and starving.

Katie is now on a special diet in which she is given small amounts of food every two hours to retrain her stomach into eating regularly.
