Police say the mum, based in Pennsylvania, is homeless and struggles with mental health issues.

Scranton Police Department released photos of the boy, thought to be between 12 and 15 months old – on social media, and said that what his mother did does not constitute a crime.

They tweeted out a photo of the baby boy, appealing for information on his parents’ whereabouts.

Scranton Police said: “Help ID this 12-16m old child. Women left child @ 1400 blk of Mulberry St. “Women is a light skin blk female, reddish brown hair. Was with a blk male, 6 ft tall, blk curly hair/pony tail.”
Police have since tracked down the mother, but it’s unclear whether the male was found.
They told WNEP that the mother-of-one had sought out the stranger after seeing her caring for three other children.

She handed over her young son after deciding that the stranger would be able to take better care of him than she could.
Cops say the little boy was well cared for and showed no signs of neglect.
The boy is currently being cared for by social services while workers continue to question his mother about her well-being.
