Calabasas football gets back on track with decisive win over Valencia
CALABASAS >> Without wide receiver and LSU commit Jermaine Burton, Calabasas relied on its run game with running backs Jaylen Thompson and Jyden King. Thompson had 23 carries for 144 yards while King had 18 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown.
King said after the game, “All we did was run downhill and try and get positive yards.”
The Calabasas defense was strong Friday, allowing only 57 passing yards to Valencia quarterback Ryan Morrison and sacking him three times. It also only allowed 18 combined rushing yards to Valencia running backs Jake Santos and Nicholas Pham and only 60 total yards to the Valencia offense.
Calabasas’ defense also added to the scoreboard when Peter Briggs picked up a fumble and scored with 2:41 left in the game to seal the nonleague game, 35-7.
“It felt great to come out and get a good team win,” said linebacker Zack Shadorf. “And for the defense to put up a donut and just be on our assignments all game.”
Calabasas quarterback Jaden Casey was 16 of 22 for 212 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions. Oregon commit Johnny Wilson caught a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Valencia’s only touchdown was in the third quarter when cornerback Jonathan Tcheumani picked off Casey and returned it to the end zone.
Calabasas (4-2) will open Marmonte League play next week and host Westlake. Valencia (2-3) will start on its quest for an 11th consecutive Foothill League title when it takes on Canyon.
