Christian Coleman wins 100m gold at the World Championships with blistering 9.76 run

CONTROVERSIAL Christian Coleman is the world’s fastest man – just weeks after escaping a doping ban.

Zharnel Hughes missed out on Britain’s 100th World Championship medal as he disappointingly finished sixth in a super-fast 100m final in Doha.

Earlier this month the American, 23, avoided a suspension on a technicality even though he was deemed culpable for three whereabouts failures, which is a breach of anti-doping rules.

Coleman, who denies any wrongdoing and insists he is clean, did not go missing this time with a time of 9.76sec – the SIXTH-FASTEST time in history – as he became the first male sprint champion of the post-Bolt era.

Yet his coronation will raise questions about whether he should have been in Doha at all.

Olympic legend Michael Johnson told BBC Sport: “It was never a competition.”

American Justin Gatlin (9.89sec) and Canadian Andre de Grasse (9.90sec) won silver and bronze, respectively.

Hughes arrived in Qatar with a strong chance of standing on the podium but he will have to regroup quickly with the 200m heats taking place later on Sunday.

Hughes said after the race: “It wasn’t the best race for me tonight but hey, congrats to the medalists, all the best to them.

“Those things happen. You have to be strong-minded. I am disappointed but I cannot give up on myself, I still have the 200m to come. My body just wasn’t feeling up for it.”
