Now they need to keep chasing leaders Liverpool, who remain five points clear and can’t afford any slip-ups until the clubs meet in November. Everton is the toughest challenge until then, but City has won comfortably in its last two visits to Goodison and are ready to start a winning streak.

For the Toffees, this isn’t just about playing the role of spoiler and trying to get something against the champions. Everton has invested a lot and Marco Silva is considered one of the best managers in the Premier League, so the expectations before the season were that this squad could get into the Top 6 and be at the same level as the best teams in the country. So far the team has just two wins and seven points from its opening six games and is sitting in 14th place in the table, which is not acceptable for a team with so much talent. Everton needs to give Manchester City a run for its money. If Everton suffers a bad defeat, then Marco Silva’s job could be hanging by a thread.
