Steven Matz Finishes Season on High Note with Six Scoreless Frames

Steven Matz finished his second straight season with 30 games started on Saturday, and did so on a high note, twirling six scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves while registering seven strikeouts.

Matz, 28, will finish the campaign with a 11-10 record, a 4.21 ERA, 4.60 FIP, 1.341 WHIP, and 153 strikeouts.

The Long Island native who dealt with injury problems through his first three season in the big leagues, has now strung together two consecutive seasons of healthy baseball.

While the southpaw didn’t set the world ablaze, he solidified himself as a quality fifth starter who has the ability to impress occasionally.

Back in the summer, Matz pitched out of the bullpen for a couple games, but was ultimately shifted back into the rotation.

For the second half of the season, Matz had an ERA of 3.52 in 14 starts, compared to the first half of the year where he had a 4.89 ERA in 18 games.

Matz is arbitration eligible in 2020 and can become a free agent in 2022.
