An “Israeli-Arabic” plot to assassinate Gen. Qasem Soleimani commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was foiled, a director of the IRGC Intelligence Service revealed on October 3.

Hojjatoleslam Hossein Taeb said during the 23rd Supreme Assembly of IRGC Commanders that the plot, which was also aimed at provoking a religious war, was planned for years by Israeli and Arabic intelligence services.

“After the failure of various seditions and conspiracies to surrender Islamic Republic of Iran, launch of bipolar war and resistance as well as its counterproductive effects, enemies of the Islamic Revolution and noble nation of Islamic Iran sought to materialize their malicious objectives in southeast part of the country during Muharram and Fatemiyah mourning ceremonies but they failed thanks to the vigilant security and intelligence forces of the country as well as measures taken by IRGC’s Ground Forces.” Mehr News quoted Taeb as saying.

According to Taeb, the assassination squad bought a house next to the shrine of Gen. Soleimani’s father, prepared 350-500kg of explosives and planted them in a tunnel under the shrine.

The squad planned to carry out the attack on September 8 or 9, which are the 9th and 10th days of the holy Islamic month of Muharram. Gen. Soleimani was supposed to visit his father shrine on one of these days.

The IRGC intelligence arrested the entire squad, which consisted of three operatives only. Their identities were not revealed.

“The assassination squad was so confident that it could carry out its plan that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a few weeks ago that they would assassinate Gen. Soleimani,” said Taeb.

Gen. Soleimani is believed to be responsible for much of the IRGC’s activity in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.  The Iranian commander revealed some details about his work in a rare interview that was aired a few days ago.

Israel has not commented on the IRGC’s accusations, so far. The Arab states allegedly involved in the association plot are yet to be named by Iran.
