Most expensive listing in Westlake Village is a mansion owned by onetime Guitar Center owner

The country French manor-style home of Ray Scherr, the former owner of the Guitar Center chain of music stores, is Westlake Village’s most expensive listing.

Set on 4.5 acres in guard-gated Country Club Estates, the house is on the market at $11.9 million. Records show that Scherr and his wife, Janet, bought the 16,200-square-foot house, which was completed in 1995, for $9.4 million in December 2002.

The house opens to a rotunda foyer and contains six bedroom suites, a movie theater and a wine cellar.

A wet bar fills an area of the family room. The dining room offers a view of the courtyard fountain. In the gourmet kitchen are two center islands with counters and a butler’s pantry.

An elevator offers an alternative to the staircase that leads to the private master suite that has “his” and “hers” bathrooms, a sitting room with fireplace, French doors and a wrap-around balcony with views of the grounds.

Outdoor features include a resort-style pool and spa, gardens with fountains, and a guest house.

Denise Arledge of Compass holds the listing.

Scherr ran Guitar Center from the late 1970s until 1996. In 1985 he created the Rock Walk outside of the store in Hollywood to acknowledge pioneers of the music industry. Scherr and his wife are also patrons of the arts.

A venue at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is named in their honor.
