Skupski/Murray End Djokovic's Doubles Run In Shanghai

0

Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic sprung an upset in the first round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, defeating reigning Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies in a Match Tie-break. But that was as far as their run went.

Brits Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski eliminated the Serbians on Thursday, winning 6-3, 6-2 in 58 minutes to advance to the quarter-finals of this ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Murray and Skupski have now reached at least the quarter-finals at five consecutive tour-level events they have played. They will next face fourth seeds Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus, who beat two-time Nitto ATP Finals champions Henri Kontinen and John Peers 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-8.

Second seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo battled past dynamic Indian-Canadian duo Rohan Bopanna and Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. The defending Shanghai champions can guarantee their spot at the Nitto ATP Finals by reaching the semi-finals, since Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau and Krawietz/Mies both failed to make the last eight.

Kubot and Melo will next face last week’s Beijing winners, Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek, who outlasted Rojer and Tecau 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 10-7 after two hours.

Sixth seeds Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who triumphed last week in Tokyo, advanced to the quarter-finals when Matteo Berrettini, who was playing with Felix Auger-Aliassime, withdrew from doubles due to fatigue. Mahut and Roger-Vasselin will face Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury for a spot in the last four.
