The popularity of IRV as an alternative to plurality voting is perplexing. Historically there are many other ranked-choice voting systems that seem, if for no other reason than complexity, preferable to IRV. ----This article explores those older systems, suggesting reasons for IRV's popularity. Some insight is gained but without really settling that question.
