All the marbles are up for grabs in Group A (League A) of the CONCACAF Nations League on Tuesday when the United States can tie level with pool leaders Canada if they win at BMO Field.
The Canucks haven’t beaten their neighbors to the south since 1990 but will be desperate to end that 12-match winless run and keep their priority place in the League A pecking order.

While Canada’s recent win record against the Stars and Stripes makes for grim reading, it’s worth noting they have drawn two of their last three clashes and conceded only one goal throughout.
The United States’ 7-0 decimation of Cuba on Friday served as a comfortable introduction to the competition. Schalke starlet Weston McKennie scored a hat-trick while team-mates Jordan Morris, Josh Sargent, and Christian Pulisic also joined in on the plunder with a goal apiece.
That result ended a run of three matches without a win for Gregg Berhalter’s men, not to mention exorcised some attacking demons after scoring just once during that stretch.
Canada has lost only twice in their last 11 matches, one of which was a 3-1 defeat to eventual Gold Cup champions Mexico in June. The other—a 3-2 defeat to Haiti during the same competition—was a much greater disappointment.
Berhalter has gone with a young squad for this series of Nations League matchups, but the likes of Morris, 24, McKennie, 21, and Sargent, 19, may struggle more to keep pace in Toronto.
Canada has their own band of up-and-coming prospects whom the U.S. need to be wary of, in particular, the 18-year-old Bayern Munich wing Alphonso Davies and 19-year-old forward Jonathan David, who is currently impressing at Gent.
United States defender Reggie Cannon was full of praise for Bayern wide man Davies.
“One of the best players I’ve ever played against. He had no fear. He would take you on every time. And that’s something that I admire in a player. Because to play at this level with no fear? That’s something rare. So anytime someone ever asks me who is the best player you ever played against, he’s definitely top three.”
This year’s Gold Cup finalists have to consider Tuesday’s away fixture a must-win if they’re to soften the task of toppling Canada from the top of Group A. The Canucks, however, can guarantee they’ll at least finish the group level on points with Berhalter’s side with a win.
