WATCH: Angels to hire Joe Maddon as next manager
Joe Maddon is returning to his Anaheim baseball roots as the next manager of the Los Angeles Angels.
The team announced the hire on Wednesday, a three-year deal.
Maddon held a variety of coaching roles with the Angels from 1979 to 2005, including scout, minor league manager, bench coach, and interim manager for the big-league club. He left to manage the then-Devil Rays after the 2005 season, spending nine years in Tampa Bay.
He spent the past five seasons with the Chicago Cubs, winning the World Series in his second season with the team. The club’s 84 wins in 2019 are the lowest total since 73 wins in 2014, the year Chicago fired Rick Renteria and hired Maddon.
There are now seven remaining managerial openings around the league.
