Artis Mack, James Bashir Ali's alleged assailant, faces felony charges

Artis Mack faces felony assault charges in connection to a violent altercation at the October 4 Claressa Shields-Ivana Habazin weigh-in in Flint, Michigan, that left trainer James Bashir Ali unconscious.

The Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charges Wednesday

The 68-year-old Ali, Habazin’s trainer, was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery for reported facial fractures. Five days later, Ali returned to the hospital with a brain bleed, according to a Facebook post from Habazin.

According to Prosecutor David Leyton, Flint police say Mack was spotted fleeing the scene on foot by a police officer, who noticed he matched the suspect’s description, Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman David Leyton said in a statement

“The officer followed Mack into a nearby neighborhood and an arrest was made,” Leyton said.

According to several media reports, Mack, 28, is Shields’ older brother. That reported relationship was not included in the statement from Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office.
