Bay Area earthquakes: 2.8-magnitude quake hits near Cupertino

CUPERTINO — A 2.8-magnitude earthquake rattled near Cupertino on Saturday morning, the latest in a stream of Bay Area quakes during the week that shook residents.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 10:06 a.m. just west of Cupertino and was about 3 miles in depth.

On Monday night, a 4.5-magnitude quake struck just south of Pleasant Hill, preceded and followed by dozens of smaller earthquakes in the Pleasant Hill and Pacheco areas, according to the USGS and Caltech. Another quake in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday registered a magnitude of 3.4. Also on Tuesday, a 4.7-magnitude quake rattled rural San Benito County.

According to Contra Costa County officials, the Monday night earthquake caused the plants at the Shell Martinez Refinery and the Marathon Martinez Refinery to shut down and brought flaring from both facilities.
