Houstonian's Heights bungalow blends 1920s style with modern luxury

Step inside, walk past the original front room, and her charming little bungalow turns into an open, contemporary space full of intriguing art and sleek details. The theme of this year's tour is "Embracing Change," and Gilbert's abode exhibits just that - it's a seamless blend of 1920s architecture with 21st-century luxury. In 2013, her builder broke ground on an addition that would double the size of the home, taking it from 1,176 square feet to nearly 2,400. Where a narrow kitchen and a big backyard once were, there is now a master suite, an open kitchen, a bright and cozy living area. The kitchen has its own eye-catching glass; the countertops are Ruby Red Vetrazzo tile, a slab of white cement filled with sparkling shards of red goblets. Weatherproof prints hang on the fence above the pool, and wind spinners add a splash of color above the back wall. Stained glass windows can be found throughout the house; there's a contemporary design in the master bathroom, and a geometric, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired window in the guest bath.
