Bundle up! Cold and breezy conditions by tonight

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Are you ready for some cold, dry, and breezy weather?

We’re about to see our first real wind chill event so far this fall. By Tuesday morning, cold air will drive south from Canada and that cold air will permeate across the Columbia Basin, quickly dropping our temperatures.

Cold Air Weather Pattern

Check out the upper-level weather chart above that shows a chute of cold air moving south from Canada and protruding into the Columbia Basin. The cold air to the east with that warmer air and high pressure to the west will cause a fairly sharp temperature gradient. This will crank up the east wind from the Columbia Gorge and create a wind chill down into the 20s and potentially the teens for some locations by Tuesday morning. A wind advisory is in place from 10 p.m. Monday night until 7 p.m. Tuesday with wind gusting to 40 to 50 mph.

Below you can get an idea of the wind strength through time, with the strongest of the wind likely occurring overnight and slowing down by Sunday evening. Expect blowing leaves and maybe some problems with Halloween decorations that may not be stapled down.

There is no better definition of BRISK than what we will be experiencing by Tuesday morning. Temperatures likely near freezing or cooler, with wind chill values or feel like temperatures in the 20-degree range.

Most locations will be feeling like the lower to mid-20s in the Willamette Valley. What exactly is wind chill? Well, when the wind starts to pick up it will quickly cause the transfer of heat near your skin to increase. So as the wind increases Tuesday morning, it draws heat from the exposed body, like your hands, and this will drop down your skin temperature making it “feel” cooler. The best fix for this? Wear gloves, hats, and whatever you can to keep covered up and warm.
