Breeders’ Cup: 14-1 longshot Belvoir Bay takes Turf Sprint
ARCADIA — Stormy Liberal didn’t win his third consecutive Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, but his trainer, Peter Miller, did Saturday at Santa Anita.
Miller saddled 14-1 longshot Belvoir Bay for a 1 1/4-length victory in the $1 million race at 5 furlongs.
The 6-year-old gelded son of Equiano ran the distance in a track-record 54.83 seconds.
Javier Castellano won his second Breeders’ Cup race of the weekend, holding off a late charge by another Miller runner, Om, who went postward at 15-1.
Shekky Shebaz finished third, a nose behind Om.
Stormy Liberal was attempting to become the second horse (Goldikova was the first) to win the same Breeders’ Cup race three consecutive years. Goldikova won the Mile from 2008-10. Stormy Liberal finished eighth in the field of 12 at odds of 15-1.
